World finance ministers agree to historic IMF shake-up
THE Group of 20 nations struck a hard-fought agreement today on reforming the IMF to give a greater say to emerging nations such as China in the world's financial watchdog.
G20 finance ministers clinched the deal after years of efforts to make the Washington-based Fund better reflect a shift in global power - with the result that China, India and others will gain more weight at Europe's expense.
"It's the biggest reform ever in the governance of the IMF," IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn told reporters as the G20 bloc of advanced economies and emerging powers met in the South Korean city of Gyeongju.
Formed after World War II to remake the world financial system and prevent a 1930s-style Depression, the IMF has long been dominated by Western powers, but has faced growing calls to adapt.
"China supports the IMF quota reform, through which emerging countries will gain stronger representation and bigger says," China's central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan said in Gyeongju, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Casamento clinches Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster
Casamento clinches Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster
Dettori (centre) has had 12 winners in the last two weeks
Frankie Dettori rode Casamento to victory in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster to give trainer Mick Halford his first Group One win.
The 2-1 favourite took the lead two furlongs from home and kept on to fend off Aidan O'Brien's 8-1 shot Seville. Another O'Brien-trained horse, Master of Hounds (15-2), was third.
The race is traditionally regarded as a Derby trial, but afterwards Halford said Casamento "might have enough speed for the [2,000] Guineas".
Dettori hailed the win as a "great performance", saying: "I'm delighted for [owner] Sheikh Mohammed and Mick, which is his first Group One.
"I think he's probably a Derby horse, but we'll wait and see."
Casamento, who now heads to Mohammed's Godolphin operation, had settled in behind leader Dubawi Gold in the early stages but after hitting the front only O'Brien's pair challenged as Dunboyne Express, a 4-1 starter, faded.
Johnny Murtagh's mount, Master of Hounds, briefly closed on Casamento a furlong out and Seville belatedly surged in the final yards.

England's brave second-half fightback was in vain as they lost to world champions New Zealand in the opening match of the Four Nations tournament.
Junior Sau and Lance Hohaia scored in a one-sided first half with Shaun Kenny-Dowall adding a third after half-time. Two tries in two minutes by James Roby and Gareth Widdop raised England hopes.
Kevin Brown was denied a third try for pushing and almost instantly Benji Marshall found the tightest of gaps to score in the right-hand corner.
The result leaves England facing an uphill task to reach the final of the tournament which also includes Papua New Guinea and hot favourites Australia, who meet on Sunday.

Ronaldo wheels away after his free-kick put Real in front in the Bernabeu
By Jonathan Stevenson |
Real Madrid took another step towards the last 16 of the Champions League with a comfortable Group G victory against AC Milan at the Bernabeu.
The hosts went ahead when Cristiano Ronaldo's free-kick sneaked through the wall and it was 2-0 when Mesut Ozil's shot deflected in off Daniele Bonera. Andrea Pirlo's free-kick struck the bar and Clarence Seedorf blazed over for Milan but they were easily second best.
Angel di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain both wasted chances as Real cruised home.
The three points take Real five clear of both Milan and Ajax and victory in the San Siro in two weeks' time will guarantee a knockout berth for Jose Mourinho's men.
"We have nine points but of course we want to be first in the group and to achieve that we have to continue winning matches."
With 16 European Cup trophies between them it was a genuine clash between two heavyweights of the game as the competition's two most successful teams went head-to-head.
